Suggestions of Where to Go
Bečov Castle was founded in the 14th century at an important crossroads of provincial roads by the Lords of Osek. The Castle flourished in the 15th and the 16th centuries when it was held by the Lords of the House of Pluh from Rabštejn who made a fortune mining silver and pewter in the neighbourhood. The Renaissance Pluh Palace was built in this period. During the Baroque period, the lower manor house was constructed and it has been open to the public since 1996. The Gothic castle is not open to the public at the moment as it is undergoing reconstruction works. Nevertheless, the whole complex is quite impressive. In 1985 the Romanesque reliquary of St. Moor was found in the castle under rather dramatic circumstances. The reliquary is the most precious reliquary in Europe. It is a unique example of the extraordinary artistic and craftsmanship quality of Romanesque jewellers and it is the only reliquary of its kind in Bohemia. It is exhibited in the Baroque Manor House. The tour will also take you to some rooms to enjoy the 19th century interiors and the permanent castle exhibition. The terraces offer superb views over the valley and the preserved municipal area. Once you have seen the castle, you might enjoy taking the nature trail through some lovely countryside up to the Gallows where in the Middle Ages people were hung.

This is the second largest Czech spa with a great number of mineral springs. In 1866 Mariánské Lázně was elevated to the status of a town and at the beginning of the 20th century it was one of the most important European holiday destinations. The main promenade of the town starts at the amazing cast iron structure from 1889, a technical landmark in itself. You can continue to the Singing Fountain where every other hour a musical performance accompanies the water jets and at 9 pm this is all further enhanced by a light show. There is also a Miniaturpark in the town where one can find miniatures of the architectural jewels of the Czech Republic.

The Monastery was founded by the Blessed Hroznata, a Czech nobleman. The oldest preserved part is the Romanesque/Gothic three-nave church of the Annunciation of Our Lord. At the end of the 17th century Kryštof Diezenhofer built a Baroque Dormitory (southern wing) to replace the original Gothic buildings ruined by fire. The adjacent out-buildings were built over four centuries, from the 15th to the 19th centuries. The library and the museum (northern wing) are from the New Baroque Period built between 1902 and 1910.

The town was founded during the reign of King Wenceslas I in 1240 around the castle bearing the same name. The castle foundations date back to the third quarter of the 12th century on a buttress perched above the Ohře River. The castle grew in importance after 1230 when the county administration seat was moved here from the nearby town of Sedlec. The town and the castle formed one defensive unit and there was only one town gate manned day and night. During the reign of King Přemysl Otakar II a special system of vassalage formed around the castle and the town. The town strengthened its economic and strategic position during the reign of Přemysl Otakar II, being positioned on the trade route from Cheb and Kraslice to Prague via Žlutice and Kadaň.

This huge set of granite rocks with tens of rocky pillars and columns of various sizes have inspired human fantasy for hundreds of years. First, they appeared in folk tales, and later many artists, such as J.W.Goethe, V.Mrštík, H.Marshner used them in their works. With some imagination the rocks can seem to resemble a wedding party, and thus they were named the Broom, the Bride, Musicians, and Witnesses. There are many legends connected with this place. The legends are written out on the boards of the nature trail leading through this area. The rocks received the status of a protected natural phenomenon in 1933. The rocks can be found near Karlovy Vary if you follow the Ohře River via Doubí heading towards Loket.
